Black Power Salute: A Symbol of Resistance
50th Anniversary of Iconic Image
A Legacy of Protest
Fifty years ago, at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, American runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos made history with their iconic Black Power salute on the Olympic podium. As they stood on the victory stand, with Smith winning gold and Carlos taking bronze in the 200-meter dash, the athletes raised their fists and bowed their heads, a bold gesture of defiance and solidarity with the civil rights movement back home.
The Black Power salute, immortalized in a photograph that became one of the most influential protest images of all time, was a powerful symbol of black pride and resistance against racial injustice. It sparked controversy at the time, with many condemning it as disrespectful and unpatriotic, but it has since become an enduring legacy of the fight for equality.
