France's Election Results: Surprises Abound
The European Elections of 2019
Unforeseen Outcomes
The recent European elections in France have produced a number of unexpected outcomes, leaving many political observers surprised and questioning the direction of French politics. The far-right National Rally party, led by Marine Le Pen, emerged as the largest party in the country, with over 23% of the vote. This represents a significant gain for the party, which had only won 18% of the vote in the previous European elections in 2014.
The incumbent party, La République En Marche, led by President Emmanuel Macron, came in second place with just over 21% of the vote. This is a disappointing result for Macron, who had hoped to secure a clear victory and strengthen his position in the run-up to the next presidential election in 2022. The Socialist Party, once the dominant force in French politics, suffered a heavy defeat, winning only 6.1% of the vote, and losing half of its seats in the European Parliament.
